How to play Addventure

(the addvanced features)

So... trying to be fancy? Want to link to other episodes that have been created? Want to be told when people extend your storyline? Mastered all of the basic features of the game? In that case...

New episode notification

The notification feature causes Addventure to send you email when a new episode is created from one of the options you provided. To enable this, you must do two things:

Provide an email address
Check the box on the option entry page, indicating you want the email

This email address is only used for these addvanced features, and is not otherwise available unless you place it in your signature.

Does the game support notification?

If notification is supported, the about program will indicate this by saying If requested, you will be notified when your episode is expanded to, otherwise notification is not available.

Backlinking

Linking from one of the choices in a episode you are creating to a previous episode requires four things:

The game must support linking
The episode you are linking to must have linking enabled
You must indicate on the scenario entry page how you want to pick the episode you are linking to
You must enter the episode(s) you wish to link to as part of the option entry page

Does the game support linking?

If linking is not supported, the about program will indicate this by saying Linking to existing episodes is not allowed. Otherwise you may backlink.

Linking enabled

Those episodes that you may link to from a later room say Linking Enabled at the bottom of the page.

To designate that linking to a episode is allowed, select the box labeled Link to this episode later on the option entry page. This has the side effect that children of rooms that may be linked to will not have a built-in link to their parent room.

Requesting backlinking

When creating a new episode, you need to indicate that you would like one or more of the options to link to a previous episode on the text entry page. The pull-down menu towards the middle of the document labeled Create all new episodes may be selected to choose one of the options:

Create all new episodes (default): No backlinking. All new episodes are created.
Allow links to previous episode - list by title: Each option in the option entry screen will have a scroll box next to it with the episodes that may be linked to. This list of episodes is sorted alphabetically by the title of the episode.
Allow links to previous episode - list by number: Each option in the option entry screen will have a scroll box next to it with the episodes that may be linked to. This list of episodes is sorted numerically by the episode number.
Allow links to previous episode - don't list: Each option in the option entry screen will have a numeric entry box next to it for you to enter the episode number in.

The second and third options are only available if the about program indicates If requested, you may list the episodes that can be linked to. If about indicates To link to another episode, you must know the episode numnber, then you can only select the first or fourth option.

Selecting backlink episodes

Selecting the episode to backlink to depends on the method you chose to display them in the previous step:

If you selected one of the list choices, you can either select one of the episodes to link to that episode, or New episode if you wish to link to a room to be created.
If you selected the entry box, you can either enter the episode number of a episode that is link enabled, or enter nothing to link to a new episode.

Mailing list for authors

Some games have mailing lists so the authors can discuss future episodes and plot lines. To subscribe to the list when creating an episode, you must do two things:

Provide an email address
Check the box on the option entry page, indicating you want to subscribe

This email address is only used for these addvanced features, and is not otherwise available unless you place it in your signature. Depending on the mailing list, your address may be available to others on the list.

Is a discussion list available?

If a list is available, the about program will indicate this by saying There is a mailing list available for authors, otherwise it is not possible to subscribe to a discussion list.

Including your email address in your signature

Addventure can help you make your signature a link that will allow a reader to send you email. To request this you must do two things:

Provide an email address
Check the box on the option entry page, indicating you want your signature to be a link to send you email

This is not anonymous, and readers using this feature will have access to your email address.
